The Difference between a Doula and a Midwife

The definition of…

A doula is a trained professional who provides non-medical support and guidance during pregnancy, birth, and postpartum.

A midwife is a trained health professional who assists women, with no complications during pregnancy, in childbirth.

What does your doula do?

Your doula can provide support during pregnancy, labor, and postpartum. Your doula will:

  • Keep in touch with you during pregnancy

  • Provide resources relevant to your pregnancy and birth plan

  • Offer non-medical techniques during labor such as breathing, massage, and helping you move into different body positions

  • Provide emotional support

  • Advocate on your behalf

  • Support your choices, whether they are medical or non-medical

  • Check up on you and your family during postpartum

Research shows that many mothers report the need for less medical interventions and more satisfaction with the birthing process when using a doula.

What does your midwife do?

Your midwife can provide care before, during, or after your pregnancy. Your midwife will:

  • Provide family planning and preconception care

  • Do prenatal exams and order tests

  • Watch your physical and psychological health

  • Help you make your birth plans

  • Advise you about diet, exercise, meds, and staying healthy

  • Educate and counsel you about pregnancy, childbirth, and newborn care

  • Give you emotional and practical support during labor

  • Admit and discharge you from the hospital

  • Deliver your babies

  • Make referrals to doctors when needed
